Tell your friends and neighbors! This Saturday, September 10, Manna Cafe will be having another Mobile Pantry. Montgomery Central Elementary has generously offered their location once again. Free groceries will be distributed to whomever is in need, beginning at 10:00 a.m. (arrive early if possible!) All you need is an ID; we’ll even take your groceries to your car and load them.

A team of hard-working, faithful volunteers is standing by, but we can always use fresh troops at clean-up time at 1:00 p.m.

See you there!

Good Times at Manna Cafe

What a great day! More than a hundred peeps came by the Manna House today to celebrate the completion of our new commercial kitchen. So many folks pitched in; it was very touching and I pray that God blesses your socks off. Rob Seklow/Clarksville Now did such a great job of reporting that I’ll just pass on the link:

Moving forward, looking upward…

Happy Anniversary to Manna Cafe

This coming week, Manna Cafe celebrates its one-year anniversary! With the help and encouragement of several local pastors and other Clarksville residents, Kenny and I left Nashville and moved to Clarksville (Kenny’s home town) a year ago last week. A few days later, tragedy struck with the flood of 2010. We hadn’t yet unpacked all our belongings when Kenny jumped into disaster relief with both feet. The task was almost overwhelming, but we’re so grateful that God set everything into place at the appropriate time. For example, we were given a building to use, free of charge, for 6 months; and a handful of volunteers jumped into the fray along with us. As the anniversary of the flood draws near, let’s remember those who suffered because of it. Some are still recovering to this day.

Quick update: The work has begun on the new commercial kitchen—again, thanks to servants and supporters too many to name. Before long, everything will be under one roof at the Manna House (1319 E. Franklin St. location), including warehouse, offices, kitchen, and food distribution.

God continues to blow us away with the amazing things He’s doing through MCM. We are now distributing an average of 15,000 pounds a month through the food pantry and 1300 hot meals per month through the Mobile Cafe. (In the photo, Kenny is standing in front of roughly 15,000 pounds of canned and boxed food, just to give you an idea of how much food this is…) In order to keep from freaking out about these numbers, Kenny and I just keep reminding ourselves that God is in control, and as long as He gives us the food, we’ll get to the people who need it. As always, we’re deeply indebted to our team and volunteers, without whom this would be absolutely impossible.

Looking forward to the year to come….

Thank You!

As the month of March draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone who made Manna March Madness such a huge success. It would be impossible to mention everyone who went out of his or her way to help us raise funds, food, and/or awareness during the past few weeks—so please allow us to offer a collective and heartfelt thank you.

Manna Café has been in Clarksville for just under a year, and our task grows day by day. The enormity of it is sometimes daunting. For example, we gave out 159 boxes of food last week—that’s 4770 pounds of food in one week! With numbers like that, it’s all we can do not to think too far ahead, to wonder where all the food’s going to come from week after week and how it’s all going to be picked up, boxed, and distributed. In other words, we’re constantly reminded of how little we are and how big God is. In His wisdom and kindness, He put in on your hearts to help, and we’re so grateful for that.

Sometimes it’s tempting to ask a volunteer, “Are you sure you want to do this?—i.e. stand out in the freezing cold/wind/rain and serve food, relinquish your Saturday mornings, give away your hard-earned money?” Week after week, you continue to say yes. May you abundantly reap what you have abundantly sowed!

Manna March Madness is here! We’re excited about this month-long event: 31 days to fight hunger. Friends from all over Clarksville are joining forces with Manna Cafe Ministries to stock our food pantry, raise funds, and educate the community about the hunger issue. Many, many thanks to the businesses, churches, and individuals who are making a difference in Clarksville. If you’d like to step up to the plate, there’s still time– just call 931.933.0970.

Happy February!

Happy February!

Throughout the month of February, Manna Cafe will be gearing up for next month’s Manna March Madness, a 31-day event to stock our food pantry, raise awareness, and find creative ways to fight hunger. Stay tuned for dates, places, and times, or if you’d like to host a food drive at your place of business or church, give us a call at 931-933-0970.

In the meantime, Tuesday and Thursday Cafes are in full swing, along with Saturday morning Community Breakfast–in spite of lots of cold days and an abundance of snow. All three of our meals are outdoors, but with the help of tents and heaters, things have still been cozy and warm, relatively speaking! Week after week, our faithful volunteers have braved the frigid temperatures to carry out our weekly meals, and they’ve done it with the most amazing attitudes. I’ve worked side by side with these incredible servants as they’ve set up tents with hands that were so cold they couldn’t feel their fingers; shoveled snow so our guests wouldn’t slip; wrapped extra scarves around their necks as the wind grew colder and colder; and watched spilled coffee freeze as it hit the serving table–and I can honestly say I’ve never heard a complaint. In fact, we spend a lot of time laughing. Manna Cafe volunteers are my heros.

Fridays have been great, as we spend time in God’s presence getting “refueled.” Every first Friday of the month is the Well-Diggin’, a night of worship starting at 7:00. Every third Friday, CHOP (Clarksville House of Prayer) carries out their evening of prayer/worship, also at the Manna House. Both events are laid-back, come-as-you-are, and something you don’t want to miss. If you want to spend an evening in praise/prayer/fellowship, please join us every other Friday; you’ll be so glad you did.

Have a wonderful week!

Merry Christmas from the Yorks

What an exciting winter it’s been so far! On Combat Hunger Day, November 13, the community donated thousands upon thousands of pounds of food, which is being distributed three times a week via food boxes to families in need. In the meantime, we’re still carrying out Tuesday and Thursday Café (hot evening meals to the homeless and anyone else who decides to join the party). These are outdoor meals, so before each Café, we load up the Luv Bus and head out. Now that we’ve got tents and heaters, everyone is cozy and warm.

People have been cleaning out their closets and providing us with coats, hats, etc., so we’ve been distributing those as well. There’s nothing quite like blessing someone with a hot, yummy plate of chicken-n-rice and a puffy coat or fuzzy blanket on a cold night.

Mobile Pantries are going strong approximately once a month. At December’s Pantry we were able to pass out 354 food boxes to community families. The best part of the day was having our guests come up and say, “I came for food, but I want to help—put me to work!” We had at least three people actually give up their food box tickets in order to lend a hand. Of course we still sent them home with a box, but we were blown away and forever changed by their generosity. In this ministry, you see a lot of things that make you cry on the way home—with sadness and with joy. You see the human heart at its worst and at its best.

Once a month on Friday evenings, we now get together in the Manna House for a time of worship called the Well Diggin’. And on Saturday mornings, Community breakfast (in partnership with Grace Community) is going strong. The crowd is much smaller than our evening meal crowds, but this gives us one-on-one time with our guests, which is vital—and so much fun!

Every day, behind the scenes, our core teams takes care of the warehouse, balances the books, washes dishes, loads the bus, does the shopping, sweeps the floors, cooks the food, assembles food boxes, and does countless other tedious tasks that ultimately make a difference in the lives of hundreds of people. We couldn’t do what we do without this fabulous core team—as well as our board of directors, our amazing volunteers, and all those others who love, support, encourage, and pray for us. We’d love to thank every one of you by name, but that would be impossible—not only because we’re pushing 50 and our memories aren’t what they used to be but also because there are those who give anonymously.

To all of you who have helped in any way to carry out the mission of Manna Café, please know that we’re acutely aware that there would be no Manna Café at all without you and that we’re deeply grateful for you.

Ultimately, we owe everything to the One who loves the poor and the broken far, far more than we do—our Savior, Jesus. To Him, we say thank You for the profound honor of serving the hungry.

Merry Christmas to all!

Sincerely,

Kenny and Vicki York

Combat Hunger: November 13, 2010

WHAT A DAY. A million thanks to 5-Star Radio (JT, CeCe, and the crew) and 175 volunteers, Combat Hunger raised 15,000 lbs of food. This will help us to meet the needs of countless families in our community with food boxes. Thank you, Clarksville; by getting involved today, you’ve said that hunger is unacceptable in our town.

More to come soon… then, as Paul Harvey would say, you’ll know the rest of the story!
